Job Description

Broccoli Community Advocate 2024

Purpose:
  • Build equitable relationships with broccoli families and youth to ensure that all eligible youth and families in the program are served.
  • Provide meaningful services that achieve student and family educational goals including English classes for out of school youth, ensure access to essential resources and services, and represent the languages, cultures, and values of families and students.
Outcomes:
  • All eligible students (infant-20), including Out-of-School Youth, are served in the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and receive instructional and support services during the broccoli harvest.
  • All students experience learning opportunities where they feel welcome, supported, and connected to others.
  • All families and OSY in camps have access to resources and services that meet their basic needs.
Responsibilities:
  • Understand basic eligibility and enrollment for the Migrant Education Program, including: outreach and interviews with families; maintaining electronic records of parent communication and student information, in accordance with Migrant Education Program data protocols.
  • Plan and implement highly engaging educational activities for students (infant-20) that meet program goals and respond to students' interests, abilities, and needs.
  • Connect regularly with parents and caregivers and OSY students to: ensure that students are able to access services available in the community during the season; share information events/resources in the area and gather program feedback.
  • Connect regularly with all broccoli families and OSY students and ensure families and students have access to resources and services to meet their basic needs; connect families to support services through referrals to partner agencies.
  • Support interpretation and transportation needs in camps, as needed.
Collaboration and Supervision:

Community Advocates receive regular support and feedback from their supervisor: Leslie Monroy
  • *Note: Mano en Mano values the perspectives all staff bring to their roles, and expects that collaboration, support, and feedback can be shared between staff in any different roles.
Community Advocates collaborate with staff in the following roles:
  • MEP Coordinators - provide support to each other around strategies for services or responses to specific situations, sharing resources and information
  • MEP Director - student eligibility and service records, contract compliance, reporting requirements.
  • Access to Essential Services and Advocacy Program - making referrals between programs, sharing resources and information about what is going on in the community, and ensuring that family needs are met.
  • Office Manager - support around finance, hours, and Milbridge office use.
Community Advocates do not supervise staff in any other roles.

Important Deadlines/Timeline and Compliance Expectations:
  • Complete service entries within seven (7) days recording all instructional, counseling, and support services provided to students and families in-camps.
  • Complete Family Needs Assessments and OSY Needs Assessments in collaboration with Program Coordinators at time of student enrollment.
Qualifications and Hiring Information:
  • Values: Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Mano en Mano's mission and vision. Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate experience that reflects a commitment to equity and social justice, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience: Relevant experience demonstrating a range of skills relevant to education, social work, and/or community organizing. Preference for applicants who demonstrate: experience working with highly mobile students and an understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • Language: Must be fluent in English AND Spanish.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher. Two or more years of equivalent work experience may be considered. Preference for applicants with teacher certification.
  • Physical Requirements: none
  • Pay Range: $23.75-25.75/hour, based on language fluency.
  • Start/End Date: Monday June 3, 2024 through October 31, 2024
  • Expected Hours (Part- Time): Monday - Friday average 10 hours per week or weekends depending on availability of students
