Performs 12 lead ECGs, downloads ECGs into MUSE system, charges for completed tests, processes ECGs by completing demographics and sending ECGs to reading Cardiologist. Faxes ECGs to ordering physicians. Applies and removes holter monitors. Assists with stress testing.
Responsibilities:A day in the life of an EKG Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Obtains orders. Explain the test to the patient. Utilizes patient safety goals when performing ECGs by confirming the patient's identity and reducing risk of healthcare associated infections. Properly preps chest and applies electrodes with an approach that is appropriate to the growth and developmental needs of the neonate, child, adolescent, adult or geriatric patient. Responds to medical alerts and stats appropriately. Communicates critical results to Physicians and/or Registered Nurses immediately after performing the ECG. Ensures all patient information is entered correctly into the ECG machine. Places the unconfirmed ECG, for inpatient, in the patient's chart.
2. Charges completed ECGs in computer by completing order. Downloads ECGs into the MUSE system. Attaches correct order, completes demographics and sends ECG to reading Cardiologist to interpret and confirm in a timely manner. Faxes confirmed ECGs to ordering physicians in a timely manner. Ensures ECGs performed during their shift are processed correctly before the end of their shift.
3. Maintains/cleans equipment between patients. Ensures date and time settings are correct on ECG machines. Verifies ECG machine is set for standard paper speed.
4. Identifies quality improvement issues and develops processes to address following the Plan Do Check Act method. Participates in the collection, analysis, and application of performance improvement data for follow up and resolution. Participates in system and interdepartmental quality improvement activities. Records critical results in the ECG department book. Complies with local, state and federal regulatory and accrediting standards. Participate in continuing education, completing required e-learning, and attending required system programs annually. Maintains awareness of department issues by attending staff meetings and safety huddles.
5. Orders/maintains supplies. Contacts appropriate areas for any repairs needed and follows up until completion. Stocks ECG machines, including Code Angio folders.
6. Applies holter monitors following proper prep and application. Removes holter monitors.
7. Assists in the stress lab as needed inputting patient information in the Case system, following proper prep and application of leads.
8. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/Manager to assist in the efficient operation of the department.
9. Trains new EKG technicians to perform/process ECGs and apply/remove holters. Orients to JFK University Medical Center, department, and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with and assures staff compliance with established dress code and personal protection equipment requirements.
10. Trains PCTS/Registered Nurses to perform EKGs as needed.
11. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
12. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. An exceptional focus on teamwork.
2. Excellent communication skills when working with patients, families, physicians and other health care team members.
4. Basic computer skills.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. One year in a patient care or healthcare related environment preferred.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
2. EKG Technician Certification.
